On August 17th, Robert May (pictured above) of Flint, Michigan spoke to the club on “Lincoln’s Second Dred Scott Decision”. His talk focused on the New York case of “Lemmon v. the People” which raised the question of whether slaves traveling with their “owner” thru New York state had to be set free since slavery was prohibited in New York. The slaves were freed but the case was eventually appealed to the US Supreme Court by the state of Virginia. The case could have served as the vehicle to “nationalize slavery” but the appeal was dropped by Virginia when it left the Union.
